NK:
Jason Priestley, star of the hit TV series, Beverly Hills
90210, is the latest in a long line of foreign stars tempted
to tread the boards here in London. He has been speaking
exclusively to our Entertainment Correspondent, Ken Andrew.
Film of the
rehearsal of the opening scenes of Side Man is shown. Jason
is wearing a red jumper with 2 thin white lines down the
sleeves, black baggy trousers and trainers.
JP: "…so
tonight before the big reunion with my father, I have a
farewell dinner at Mom's, in the zip code of my youth…"
Ken Andrew is talking
over the continuing film of the rehearsal, which features
Jason, Edie Falco and Frank Wood
KA: Talking of zip
codes, it's a long way from Beverly Hills 90210 to London,
SE1, but that's where the TV star is currently rehearsing
for his British stage debut. He is appearing in Side Man
alongside the award winning American cast of the Broadway
hit that's transferred to the West End, which also includes
the fabulous Edie Falco, who sharp-eyed viewers might
recognise from The Sopranos.
JP: There is just so
much great history in the West End, and all the theatres …
the beautiful old houses and erm, there is just so much
history here, it's really … it's one of those things as a
young actor that you think, you know, as an actor, what
would I like to accomplish in my career, and you know, doing
a play in the West End of London is one of those things, and
erm, I'm just really happy that the opportunity came along.
KA: Is it a bugbear
now that you where in such a successful TV series, and you
want to do other things, and yet people like me are still
talking about it, because that's how most people know you?
Is it a bugbear now or is it…
JP: Is it a what?
KA: A bugbear. Is it
…
JP: A bugbear? (JP
smiling and pulling a comedic face at the camera)
KA: Is it a …
Jesus, you Americans! (jokingly)
JP: Hey, I'm a
Canadian (laughing). Don't start on the whole American thing,
buddy!! (laughing and joking) … no, it's a big part of my
career and a big part of my life and, you know, an
experience that I look back on with great fondness.
KA: And you can
catch the Canadian, Jason Priestley at the Apollo Theatre
from 28 February. In London, SE1, this is Ken Andrew for
London Tonight.
